Gift Guide for Home Bakers

I love to bake at home, it’s a blessing and a curse.  A blessing because I love to do it and it's fun to have different sweets around, and a curse because it's hard to eat healthy when you have baked goods around all the time!  I started baking when I was in High School, my first specialty was a snickerdoodle cake that was made by taking vanilla boxed cake mix and doctoring it up with spices.  It was pretty good, but the more I baked the better I became and I ventured into more complex recipes.  Now I love to make cakes, cheesecakes, brownies, cookies, pies - pretty much anything that involves sugar.  Over the years there are a few things that I think you absolutely need if you are an avid home baker.  Here are some of my recommendations:

KitchenAid Stand Mixer

I know, I know, this is no small gift.  BUT they are amazing and last a really long time.  The ticket price is high, but it is a great investment.  When you are creaming butter and sugar together or making frosting, you really need to be beating the ingredients for 5+ minutes.  Doing that with a hand mixer is possible, but tiring.  I love the KitchenAid because you can start it mixing and then move on to prepping the rest of your ingredients.

Spatulas

Ever try getting batter out of a bowl with a spoon?  Yeah, it's impossible to get it all out of there.  Rubber spatulas are great for scraping batter out of bowls, folding ingredients together, and if you get heat proof ones, perfect for making caramel.

Kitchen Scale

I recently got a scale, and I try and use it as much as possible.  Weighing your ingredients instead of measuring by volume is a much more accurate way to bake.  The way I measure flour may not be the same way you measure flour (spoon vs scoop technique) and the amount of flour can very greatly.  The way to get around this is to weigh ingredients.  More and more recipes have cups and ounces listed, which means you can easily measure ingredients out with your scale.  A scale also gets rid of needing so many cups, all you have to do is measure something into the bowl, reset the scale back to zero and measure your next ingredient - less to clean up!

Offset Spatula

This little guy is great for icing small cakes, and spreading batter into cake pans without dragging your hand through the batter

A pretty cake stand

You need something to display all of your hard work before it disappears and this marble one is classy and simple.

These are just a few ideas, but there are so many great options out there!  Happy shopping!
